Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Gardening Tips

Brooklyn Botanic Garden Events

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) is a vibrant site full of activity, especially as we transition into autumn. One of the highlights from September 10 to October 31, 2024, is the Seasonal Highlights Tour. This free tour, led by trained Garden Guides, is perfect for anyone wanting to enjoy the garden’s peak blooms. You can join this tour from Tuesday through Sunday between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Additionally, BBG artist in residence Patrick Costello offers an immersive outdoor performance titled The Holes Are Alive: A Garden Tour. Though this exciting event is already sold out for September 25 and 26, it’s just another example of the unique, nature-inspired activities available at the garden.

General Gardening Tips for Autumn

As we step into autumn with the Autumn Equinox on September 22, the gardening season presents several key activities. Did you know that September is an ideal time for planting trees, shrubs, and other plants? The soil retains warmth and moisture from late summer showers, making it perfect for root establishment.

This period is also great for transplanting and dividing herbaceous perennials. If you’ve noticed your plants outgrowing their space, now is the time to give them a new home!

Autumn is also the prime time for collecting seeds for the next year’s planting. Save those seeds from your favorite blooms and vegetables to ensure a bountiful garden next season. Plus, it’s time to harvest fruits — perfect for making delicious fall treats!

For those interested in biodynamic gardening, autumn is favorable for preparing biodynamic preparations. These preparations greatly enhance soil health and the overall growth of your garden, ensuring a productive garden year after year.

Family-Friendly Activities at BBG

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden isn’t just for grown-ups. Toddlers can join in the fun during the Fall First Discoveries held on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Here, kids can engage in nature-based activities, fostering an early love for gardening and the outdoors.

Ongoing Exhibits to Explore

Don’t miss the fantastic ongoing exhibits at BBG, such as Natural Attractions and the Pollinator Lounge. Natural Attractions celebrates the symbiotic relationship between plants and pollinators, while the Pollinator Lounge is an art installation specifically designed for insects. These exhibits run through October 20, 2024.
