Empowering Community Garden Leaders: A New Certificate Program
The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets has announced an exciting opportunity for current community garden leaders: the Community Garden Leadership Certificate Program. This initiative is designed to bolster the skills of garden leaders across the state through a year-long, online learning experience.
Collaboration and Funding
This program is a collaborative effort between the New York State Community Gardens Task Force and Cornell University. The goal is to leverage expertise from both organizations to provide comprehensive training. Best of all, thanks to funding from the State’s Urban Farms and Community Gardens Program, the certificate program is free for all participants.
With an application deadline set for October 1, 2024, there’s ample time for garden leaders to prepare their submissions. This deadline ensures enough time for interested applicants to gather their materials and showcase why they’re a fit for this pioneering program.
Curriculum and Commitment
The curriculum is thoughtfully designed to cover critical areas for community garden management. Topics include best management practices, community engagement, fundraising, budgeting, succession planning, and volunteer management. Participants will also learn how to navigate local policies, a key aspect of managing a community garden.
Despite being an extensive program, the time commitment is manageable. Participants should anticipate dedicating 5-9 hours per week to their online studies over the span of one year. This format allows for flexibility and ensures garden leaders can continue their important on-ground work while enhancing their skills.
Creating Sustainable Gardens
Only 15 dedicated garden leaders from across New York State will be selected for the inaugural cohort, emphasizing the program’s dedication to providing in-depth and personalized training. The overarching objective is to equip these leaders with tools and knowledge to create robust, sustainable community gardens. By strengthening individual leaders, the program aims to build overall capacity within the community garden sector.
Participants will emerge from the program with skills to enhance their gardens’ operational aspects, strengthen community bonds, and contribute to more resilient local food systems. With over 3,000 registered or permitted urban and community gardens in New York State, the impact of this program can be far-reaching, fostering healthier neighborhoods and offering fresh, local produce.
