OSU Master Gardeners Assist Tulsa Boys Home with Gardening Initiative

Initiation of the Program

The Oklahoma State University (OSU) Master Gardeners have launched an innovative gardening program at the Tulsa Boys Home. This program was started with the goal of providing the boys with invaluable life skills and enriching educational experiences through hands-on gardening activities.

Participation and Impact

The gardening program has garnered significant enthusiasm and active participation from the boys. The engaging activities have been seamlessly integrated into their educational curriculum, offering practical, hands-on learning experiences that enhance their traditional classroom education.

Educational Benefits

The boys are learning much more than just horticulture through the program. It is fostering critical thinking, teaching them measurement, and demonstrating real-world applications of gardening principles. These skills are not only educational but also help to build a solid foundation for various life skills and independent living.

Community Involvement

Regular assistance from 25 to 30 Tulsa County Master Gardeners has been foundational to the program’s success. These experienced gardeners work closely with the 62 residents of the Tulsa Boys Home, resulting in the creation of lush flower beds and productive vegetable gardens that enhance the campus environment.

Future Plans

The program has set its sights on continued growth and development. One of the exciting future plans involves growing mums for sale in the fall. The proceeds from these sales are planned to be reinvested into the gardening curriculum, ensuring the sustainability and expansion of the program.

Testimonials

The feedback from the boys has been overwhelmingly positive. They report that the gardening activities are not only relaxing but also extremely educational. They are gaining new skills that they can carry with them throughout their lives, appreciating the chance to learn and develop independent living skills.

Overall, the OSU Master Gardeners’ initiative at the Tulsa Boys Home is proving to be a resounding success. The blend of educational, practical, and emotional benefits is creating a positive impact that resonates with the boys and the entire community involved.
